The Music Theory placement exam is recommended for students who plan on studying music theory. 

The placement test for music theory courses at Harvard will be offered both in-person and remotely the week before fall 2023 classes begin. Please register to take the music theory exam.  You will be contacted directly by the department to schedule an exam. 

The placement is a diagnostic that will help us recommend whether you should take the preparatory Music 2 (offered in spring semester), 51A (Theory I, fall), or jump to 51B (Theory II, spring; this option is rare).
