Sekou McMiller & Carina del Valle Schorske in Conversation
Dance as Culture: Evaluating Appropriation versus Appreciation
From the community to the classroom and from the backyard to the stage, dancer, educator, and choreographer Sekou McMiller will discuss how African and African diaspora dance culture is being transmitted in higher education, conservatories, and concert/theater dance, and the ways in which it influences his pedagogical approach and artistic endeavors.
In conversation with award-winning New York Times writer Carina del Valle Schorske, the two will explore and analyze the intricate relationship between dance, communities, and the formation of identity through music.
