DESCRIPTION:Harvard Art Museums\n32 Quincy St.\nCambridge \nSat.\, Jan. 25\
 , 2025\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition showcases 12 life-size
hand-quilted and embroidered portraits of laborers in the marketplaces of
Côte d’Ivoire (the Ivory Coast) and Ghana\, where secondhand clothing
discarded by the United States and Europe plays a central role in the econ
omy of goods. Choumali (b. 1974) has made her birthplace of Abidjan\, Côt
e d’Ivoire\, where she continues to live and work\, a central subject of
her photographic practice. There she encountered the prevalence of bold E
nglish-language slogans on T-shirts worn by many of the laborers in the ma
rkets\; she became intrigued by the dissonance between these designs and t
he lives of the individuals wearing them. The portrait series\, called “
Yougou-Yougou” (a Malinké phrase for secondhand clothing)\, reveals the
diversity of languages\, economies\, and people found in regional marketp
laces and underscores the impacts of the international circulation of exce
ss consumer goods. \n\nGazette Classification: Art/Design\, Diversity and
