For the first Harvard Asian Pacific Islander Desi Association of Faculty and Staff (HAPIDA) Media Club event of the year, we're excited to share that Amrita Singh, writer and director, will be coming to speak to us about her short film, "Winning in America".

The short film depicts clashes with her immigrant coach-father and questions the meaning of success while vying for a spot at the prestigious National Spelling Bee, while also bringing up themes of language, identity, and claim to both — all within the context of family, filial duty/love, and growing up in the hyphenated experience.

  • Please note we will not be screening the short film at this event and instead ask our participants to watch the 12-minute film beforehand via this link.
  • To register for our discussion and Q&A with Amrita Singh, please complete the following registration form.

Born in Tamil Nadu, India, and raised in Hyde Park, Chicago, Amrita Singh is a Writer/Director with her M.F.A. in Filmmaking from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Her thesis short film “Winning in America” screened at several Academy-Award winning film festivals including The Chicago International Film Festival, LA Shorts International Film Festival, and the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, before making its online premiere with Short of the Week. She’s in development for her feature film, a postcolonial ghost story set in the small town of Nagercoil, India, which she’s workshopped as part of the NYU Production Lab Development Studio and the TorinoFilmLab. As an Assistant Professor at Pace University, she teaches an introductory film production course.
