Topology has played an ever more important role in modern condensed matter physics, especially after the discovery of topological insulators and semimetals, featured by topological band structures in the bulk and protected metallic states on the surface. Beyond electronic band structures, there are other topological excitations, which carry heat and spin but no charge in contrast to electrons in topological bands. One example is the topological magnon (or spin wave) in magnetically ordered materials, which features nontrivial topology in the spin waves. In this talk, I will discuss how to engineer topological spin waves in and out of equilibrium. First I will discuss the theoretical classification of topological magnons in static magnetic orders, and propose a family of material that realizes topological magnons. Then I will discuss how to engineer dynamical topological magnons by the light-matter interaction in magnetic materials, and provide examples.
