Ever wonder how we, as humans, are designed to experience the world around us? Our senses trigger distinct pathways in our brains evoking a wide range of emotional responses. Explorations dissects the neuroscience of human emotion. Our main piece dives deep into the psychology of fear in a theatrical foray traversing the complexities of human behavior. Join the Anubhava Dance Company, as we explore the way our bodies and minds perceive, comprehend, and react to the world around us.
Anubhava, meaning the "experience," is a dynamic dance company that aims to explore the myriad of unique emotions that encapsulate the human experience through Indian classical dance and music. Founded by Dr. Shriya Srinivasan and Joshua George, the company comprises a vibrant group of second-generation Indian-American, award-winning artists. The company's repertoire ranges from traditional works exploring the depth of Bharatanatyam to contemporary, thematic works expanding the horizons of the Indian-classical arts. Anubhava premiered at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival in 2015, receiving much critical acclaim. The company has since toured across the United States - impressing audiences, raising funds for charitable organizations through performances, and encouraging youth to continue pursuing the Indian classical arts. In recent years, Shriya and Joshua have infused their training in science and medicine into their artistic creations, producing work that explores these distinct intersections. Under a residency at the Harvard Art Lab, the company recently developed an Immersive Haptics Platform to augment the sensory experience of dance. The technology enables audiences to feel the intricate footwork produced by dancers during performances through a mobile application. This project has been documented for feature on PBS NOVA’s "Building Stuff" Series in Fall of 2024. Anubhava's work has been commissioned and supported through funding from the MIT Media Lab, Harvard ArtLab, and MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund program, with original creations produced for various organizations including SEWA International, the International Services Center, and the American India Foundation.

The Asian American Dance Troupe presents Flagship: 石涧澜影. Loosely translated to "Dancing on the Rocky Stream," this classical Chinese dance portrays a scene of friends playing and enjoying nature by a stream. With dancers constantly in motion like flowing water, this piece emphasizes transitions and formations, symbolizing the chaos of life and beauty in a rare moment of stillness.
Boston Cendrawasih presents a medley of Indonesian dances from the island of Sumatra.
Harvard EXP is the elite competitive and performance subset of Expressions, Harvard College’s premier hip-hop dance company. Harvard Undergraduate Folklorico Company is a traditional Mexican folk dance team whose mission is to educate and empower the Harvard community through Folklorico dance instruction and performance. Anugraha Raman '12 & Kohal Das will be presenting Nritta Sangam.
This pallavi/thillana fusion compares and contrasts the two Indian classical dance styles of Odissi & Bharatanatyam. Pieces of the Hindustani Varsha pallavi and Balamuralikrishna’s Carnatic Brindavani Thillana are woven together with Bharatanatyam jathis and Odissi bols. The diversity of movement specific to each dance form is exemplified in the style-specific sections of this piece; whereas, the commonalities are highlighted in the jugalbandi-like portions. This piece ends with the sanskrit mantra Om Sahana Vavatu-- a mantra calling for peace & harmony.
Music Credits: Singers: Shweta Menon & Subbu Iyer; Violin: Shubha Bhaskaran; Mridangam & Konnakol: Hareesh Parthasarathy; Flute: Agastya Sridharan; Odissi Bol: Neel Agrawal; Sound Engineer: Ethan Castellanos
