DESCRIPTION:The West Indies\, and the Caribbean as a whole\, are well-known
  for Carnival\, a beautiful and cultural celebration. However\, beyond the
  surface\, there is so much there: cultural pride and affirmation\, healin
 g\, community-building\, solidarity\, and so on. In particular\, we are lo
 oking at how Carnival can be an affirming community and space for LGBTQ+ p
 eoples as its celebrations\, embracing of diversity\, and so many other fa
 ctors make it a welcoming and open chance for people to be authentically t
 hemselves. Carnival allows people to express their gender identity through
  close and dance. Overall\, it has been a safe space for LGBTQ+ peoples fo
 r decades. For this event\, our two guests\, both students at Harvard\, wi
 ll share with us what Carnival means to them and to the larger community. 
 They will then lead us in various dances as a shared experience. \n \nFor

 rt between the GSAS Student Center\, the Harvard Gender and Sexuality Cauc
 us\, the Latinx Student Association\, the W.E.B. du Bois Society\, the Dav
 id Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies\, LGBTQ@GSAS\, and Lambda
  at HLS.
