Gender studies appeared in Russia in the late 1980s, and since then, went through several development phases. Gender researchers were marginalized in the 1990s and 2000s and faced growing pressure from the state in the 2010s when Putin's government began to promote “traditional values” and fight against “gay propaganda” and “Western influence.” This talk describes the history of gender studies in Russia, focusing on the cases of women and gender history and current independent academic projects. I will show various strategies gender researchers are applying to protect, legitimize, and develop their field despite unfavorable conditions, and how the context influences the content of gender studies in Russia.
