Overview

The public school district superintendency has become one of the most challenging positions in education. Superintendents everywhere face mounting pressures to improve academic outcomes with diminishing resources in a fractious political environment. It is no surprise that rising education leaders are reluctant to take on the job. What is the current state of the role — and education leadership more broadly? What knowledge, skills, and dispositions are most needed to lead school systems today, and how can we inspire the next generation of talented leaders to take on one of the hardest jobs there is?

We will engage with the CEOs of top organizations that train and support system-level leaders – superintendents, nonprofit leaders, and state/federal agency leaders – on the future of education leadership and make the argument for how the work, when re-defined, is work worth doing.

Host

  • Jennifer Cheatham, Senior Lecturer on Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Speakers

  • Carl Cohn, Project Co-Chair, Collaborative on Political Leadership in the Superintendency (CPLS)
  • Kristine Gilmore, Associate Executive Director, Leadership Network, AASA, The School Superintendents Association
