A debate between Harvard Professor Lucian Bebchuk and London Business School Professor Alex Edmans

The Harvard Law School Corporate Governance Program invites students to attend a virtual debate on stakeholder capitalism co-sponsored by the Financial Times.

Professor Lucian Bebchuk will present the view that, due to the structural incentives of corporate leaders, the promise of stakeholder capitalism is largely illusory and that external regulations would therefore be necessary to address stakeholder concerns. Bebchuk is the Director of the HLS Program on Corporate Governance and co-author of the recent articles “The Illusory Promise of Corporate Governance,” “For Whom Corporate Leaders Bargain,” and “Will Corporations Deliver Value to All Stakeholders?”

Professor Alex Edmans will argue that if and when stakeholder capitalism is done the right way, it can deliver substantial benefits for shareholders and society. Edmans, author of the book "Grow the Pie: How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit," directs the London Business School Corporate Governance Centre.
