The award is named after Dr. Robert Coles, a former PBHA volunteer, civil rights advocate, child psychiatrist, Harvard professor, and Pulitzer Prize winning author. His book, The Call of Service, examines the idealistic spirit PBHA seeks to foster and is a fitting title for PBHA’s annual award and lecture.
 
Professor Ross’s work emphasizes the intersectionality of social justice issues and how intersectionality can fuel transformation. As part of a 50-year history in social justice activism until her retirement from community organizing in 2012, she was the National Coordinator of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective from 2005-2012 and co-created the theory of Reproductive Justice in 1994.
